Nine Tips for Networking Virtually

​Set up your social media sites to promote your skills.  Then, you are half-way to networking your way into a new job. Today, so many people connect virtually.  You may be able to find a job without ever meeting the person who recommended you face-to-face.

Here is our list of Nine Tips to Network Virtually

  1. Use LinkedIn to connect to classmates, co-workers, former co-workers, and people that you meet in public.
  2. Use LinkedIn groups to ask questions, share career related articles, and post current information.  For example, Illinois workNet Virtual Job Club Network.  Use it to help you find job search tips.
  3. Use a career related TweetChat. You can find information and connect with others in your career field.
  4. Create or join in a Google Hangout where people are discussing topics related to your chosen field.
  5. Find an online group that offers chat sessions in your career field.
  6. Join in online forums.
  7. Attend a career path related webinar.
  8. Write a blog about your chosen career field. Provide thought leadership on topics or share your opinion on other’s articles. Be sure not to plagiarize the other person’s article.
  9. Find groups on sites like Meet-up, Ryze, or Virtual Networking International (VNI).

Be consistent when you start the online networking process. If you are going to participate once a week, do it.  People are not on these platforms all day every day.   You increase the chance that someone will see and remember your name every time you post, share or connect.
