Adult Education - Employment 101 and Your Curriculum

May 18, 2020

Career planning is always important in education, but in adult education, there’s a bit more immediacy. If you teach adult education, your students are likely trying to change or advance in their careers in some way. Because of this, it’s important to include career preparation and job search skills into curriculum. Employment 101 is a great tool for doing so.

How Employment 101 Can Help You

It’s flexible and easy to follow.

Employment 101 is a self-guided, step-by-step approach your students can go through online. The process has four main steps:

  1. Pre-Assessment – This assessment tests how much your students already know about jobs and job searching in general, and how much they need to learn.
  2. Complete the Guide – The guided approach will help your students develop a career and job search plan. Modules include:
    • Prepare a Career Plan – Students can explore careers, explore training programs, and make a career plan to reach their employment goals.
    • Prepare a Job Search Plan – Students learn about preparing for their job search. This includes getting organized and preparing a resume, portfolio, and a plan. They will also learn about networking, searching for job openings, applying for a job, and interviewing.
    • Achieve Your Goals – Students learn about accepting a job offer, getting ready for the first day of work, setting up their checking/savings account, budgeting, and continuing to build their skills.
  3. Post-Assessment – This assessment tests how much your students have learned. It features many of the same questions as the Pre-Assessment.
  4. Download Certificate – Students can download a Certificate of Completion if they score at least 70% on the Post-Assessment.

It’s holistic.

Employment 101 provides a complete set of tools and steps your students will need to get started developing a roadmap to reach their training and employment goals. The “meat” of the whole process is the Employment 101 Guide. This guide contains several sub-steps that help students build out their plans.

For example, it includes:

  • Information about all aspects of preparing for a career, such as choosing the right path, finding the right training, networking, interviewing, money management and more.
  • Step-by-step guidance with articles and other Illinois workNet tools embedded in the guide.
  • Career interest survey tools.
  • Job Skills Guide aligned to the Illinois Essential Employability Skills.
  • Career plan and job search plan template that is completed in line with the step-by-step process.
  • Access to the Illinois workNet Resume Builder.

Instructor resources are included.

Illinois workNet includes resources for getting your students started, lessons to supplement the online tool, and the Customer Support Center for viewing their saved results.

Student handouts are available to provide an overview of the tool and directions for accessing the tool.

Instructor guides provide lessons that are aligned to learning standards and include an objective, summary, activities, and discussion questions.

View your students saved results using the Illinois workNet Customer Support Center/Customer Groups tool. Students are added to your group using an invitation process. Once they join, you can view their skills and interests survey results, Employment 101 plans/results, saved Optimal Resume items and more.
