Decision Making Process When Selecting a Training Program

August 7, 2019

Selecting a training program is deciding which path you are going to take to reach your career goal. You don’t have to blindly go down any path. Open your eyes and make an informed decision about the path you want to take to your new career. Take time to review a variety of training programs and providers.

Learn about training programs and their requirements to:

  • Find where training programs are offered.
  • Figure out the time necessary to complete training.
  • Estimate the cost of completing the program.

Things to consider:

Personal interests and skill assessment results:
Select a program based on a career path that is a good match to your skills and interests. Skill and interest assessments can provide career path suggestions. Having the skills and interests needed to pursue a specific training program will help in securing your success.

Sometimes you are required to take a test to determine your current skill level. These tests may be academic (math) or technical (welding). These can help place you in the appropriate classes to ensure your success.

Labor Market Information:

When choosing a training program, you should consider the job market for a career.  This is called Labor Market Information (LMI). Use LMI to see the wages and projected job openings.

Program costs:

The cost depends on the program you select.

  • Cost per credit hour: Most classes are three credit hours. The cost may vary during Spring, Summer, and Fall. The cost may be higher if you choose a program outside your district. For example: A community college may charge $99.00 per credit hour for those in their district and $104.00 per credit hour for out-of -district students.
  • Books: These will also vary based on the program of study. Books rented are much cheaper in costs than the new books.
  • Fees: These are incurred based on equipment needed, labs, or other activities.

Financial Aid and Scholarships:

Applying for financial aid or student loans might be needed in order to help you pay for training. Take a look at the various types of financial aid and scholarships that are available through the training provider.

Length of Program:

The length of programs vary by community college based on:

  • Semesters,
  • Class availability,
  • Internet courses, and
  • Hours needed to complete the program.

Personal Expenses (travel and if needed child care/day care costs):

Personal expenses may vary depending on the program you select. Without the proper planning and budgeting your plans to get your degree could be deterred by not being able to afford to complete the program.

For example:

Expense Program A
Program B
TravelI have to travel further to this location, but I will be finished with this program in 6 months. This location is just down the road from my house.
Child Care
There are a lot of night classes.  I will have to pay a babysitter at night. Most of the classes are during the day while the kids are at school.
