Keywords are “Key” to Your Resume Being Seen

June 6, 2014

One of the best things to do in your resume is include the keywords relevant to your career path. Whether it is a human or an automated scanning program to "read" your resume, you need to include relevant key words

How do you get the right set of keys?

  • Research industry specific keywords.  For starters, a list of keywords is listed below.
  • Look at the job description.  A good job description includes the keywords that are important to a specific job or careers within an industry.
  • Sometimes the keywords (and action words) are included multiple times within a job description.  Use a word cloud to easily see which words are used most often.

Here are the steps to create your very own keyword word cloud.

  1. Find a word cloud app on the internet – For example try https://www.wordclouds.com/ - Open the tool you chose and select the option to create a new word cloud.
  2. Find 3-5 job postings in the same career field to which you would apply.
  3. Copy the job functions portion of the job postings into the word cloud maker.
  4. Hit Create.
  5. The larger the word, the more important it is or "key" to the job description.
  6. Include those keywords in your resume.
