Join DCEO and IL SBDC as they talk with Black farmers across the state to learn their history, how they have overcome challenges, and why the industry is a crucial part of the Black business ecosystem. Attendees will also learn about financial and technical assistance, and resources available to agriculture businesses in Illinois.

There is a strong history of Black farm business in Illinois. Of the 70,000 farms in the state of Illinois today, only 188 are owned by Black farmers. This is a stark contrast to 1920 when close to 1,000 farms were owned and operated by Black farmers in Illinois. Although the number of Black farm businesses has fallen, the significance and impact of agricultural business has not changed. Join us as we talk with Black farmers from across the state to learn their history, how they have overcome challenges, and why the industry is still a crucial part of the Black business ecosystem.

Supporting Youth Involved with Foster Care View

Add to Calendar 10:30 AM 2/8/202312:00 PM America/Chicago Supporting Youth Involved with Foster Care

During the Learning Renewal February Convening, ICSPS and ICCB are discussing Supporting Youth Involved with Foster Care which will include a presentation on the designated topics, time for sharing ideas, and state updates.

Youth with experience in foster care face many obstacles on the road to and through college. Many of these students struggle with homelessness, food insecurity, effects of trauma, educational instability, and lack of family and network support while trying to attend classes and persist. Educators and professionals on college campuses have an opportunity to provide increased stability, local resources, and direct support to students so they can meet their educational goals. This webinar will share best practices when working with youth who have experienced foster care and provide an opportunity to ask questions to learn more!

Attendees will walk away from the webinar with:

  1. Increased understanding of the obstacles related to postsecondary access and success for youth with experience in foster care.
  2. Best practices in supporting students on campus and in the community.
  3. Increased knowledge of resources available to youth who have experienced foster care.
Meet Your Presenters:
Karie Ward, MSW, Director, Fostering Success Michigan
Karie Ward serves as the Executive Director of Fostering Success Michigan (FSM), a statewide collective impact initiative that began in 2012 and focuses on postsecondary access and success for youth with experience in foster care. She has held many roles at FSM and has produced over 70 webinars and 32 podcasts and facilitated 15 statewide network events. Additionally, she has led the FSM Network through two organizational transitions to ensure long-term sustainability for the initiative.
