One Job Earning Double
Program Details
Angela came to our office as a family of four, having worked as a Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA) for the past twenty years while also working two part-time jobs. She was more than ready to take the following steps to advance in her nursing career and lead her family to self-sufficiency. She chose to attend the Capital Area School of Practical Nursing (CASPN) because of its reputation and high pass rates; both her sister and oldest daughter had also completed training at CASPN.
While having a two-year-old son and traveling approximately 78 miles round-trip each day to and from school, Angela maintained A and B grades during the nine-month, accelerated practical nursing training program. Some of her stress was alleviated by the support of both WIOA-funded childcare and transportation assistance during her training. Not only did the program assist with tuition, transportation, and childcare, but it also helped cover her required expenses, such as books, fees, uniforms, and certification fees, which significantly alleviated additional financial burdens and student loan obligations. Angela passed her NCLEX exam on her first attempt and began working full-time as a Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN) at Lincoln Village Healthcare Center, earning double the hourly rate she had been earning while working two part-time jobs.
Angela states, “I’m doing great and am extremely happy with my decision to become a nurse. The program and grant helped me so much! I truly couldn’t have done it without that support. It allowed me to focus on my studies, manage childcare, and complete my LPN program. I’m now working in the field I love and feel proud of what I’ve accomplished.”
