J’qiwoa Williams – IYIP Success Story
What was your situation before joining IYIP? What challenges were you facing at the time?
Before joining IYIP, I wanted to get back into school and focus on becoming an entrepreneur. At the time, I had just lost my job and was currently unemployed, so I was looking for work and trying to figure out my next steps.
What made you decide to participate in the program?
I needed the experience and was looking for a job opportunity. I found out about the internship through a friend who was in a similar program. I had already had relationships with the staff at One On One, from traditional employment coaching, and they encouraged me to apply.
What specific skills (professional or personal) did you gain through IYIP?
Through IYIP, I learned how to operate a cash register, interact with customers, and develop sales skills. I also learned how to manage my emotions and behave professionally in a work environment. Before this experience, I wasn’t very serious, but the internship helped me grow and develop my professionalism. I also built friendships during the program.
Was there a particular moment, mentor, or experience in the program that really stood out to you?
All of the One On One staff stood out to me. I especially remember when Jonathan and Angelica had an honest conversation with me about professional clothing and hair. It was a tough conversation, but it helped me understand workplace expectations and grow.
How did IYIP help you grow in confidence, responsibility, or leadership?
The program helped me gain confidence by having to speak to customers, something I had never really done before. I also learned how to take responsibility and complete tasks without someone always telling me what to do. At one point, I even had to train a coworker on tasks my boss had taught me first.
What kind of work experience did you gain, and how did it prepare you for future opportunities?
I gained experience communicating with people, listening, and learning quickly on the job. I also learned about marketing and how to help attract customers during slower times. Because of this experience, I’m now considering pursuing a career in retail or at a clothing store.
How has participating in IYIP impacted your education, career goals, or current employment?
One On One really pushed me to keep going and continue pursuing school. They even helped pay for my school application fees. Since completing the program, I’ve been applying for jobs and getting interviews because of the skills I learned through One On One.
What does success look like for you now compared to before the program?
Before the program, I might have done things halfway. Now success means completing everything thoroughly, paying attention to detail, taking my time, and avoiding slacking off or unnecessary breaks.
What would you say to other young people in Chicago (ages 16–24) who are considering joining IYIP?
I would tell them they should join because the program actually helps. One On One never led me in the wrong direction. They help with things like transportation and job searches, and they push us to keep doing better.
Is there anything else about your experience that you feel is important to share?
Overall, I had a really good experience. The staff takes their time teaching you and setting you up for success.
