Lauryn Jones - IYIP Success Story
Program Details
What made you decide to participate in the program?
I decided to participate because my plans had shifted unexpectedly. I originally intended to complete two additional semesters, not four, so this program gave me the space to focus on something meaningful. At the same time, I pivoted and reconsidered my next academic and career steps. It also provided financial support for materials, printing, and transportation to and from school, which made a real difference during that time.
What specific skills (professional or personal) did you gain through IYIP?
Before interning at the Parkway, I had never worked in hospitality, so I learned a great deal about the industry. From understanding appropriate attire to staying alert when guests are nearby and recognizing when someone may need assistance, I became much more aware of the details that shape a positive guest experience. It also helped me grow personally. I’m naturally quiet and not usually one to start conversations, but I feel far more comfortable engaging with guests and customers. This program truly pushed me beyond my comfort zone in the best way.
Was there a particular moment, mentor, or experience in the program that really stood out to you?
I chose to participate in an employee training at Peach’s, which further expanded my understanding of the hospitality industry. I genuinely enjoyed the entire experience. Cree, a manager and bartender, taught us how to confidently sell menu items without coming across as pushy. She reframed roles like serving, bartending, and being a barista as a “huge flex,” explaining that, unlike many office positions, your earning potential can shift daily based on your service skills and the tipping culture. She also emphasized the importance of presentation, showing us how to come across as polished and reliable without feeling overly formal or unapproachable to guests.
How did IYIP help you grow in confidence, responsibility, or leadership?
Overall, I became more vocal. Even something as simple as saying “Good morning” or “Have a good night” with more confidence felt like real progress for me. I also learned not to take negativity personally. Some people are simply having a bad day, and I’ve grown to understand that I don’t have to carry that with me.
How did IYIP prepare you for future opportunities?
It’s given me a well-rounded view of what it really takes to keep service flowing seamlessly.
How has participating in IYIP impacted your education, career goals, or current employment?
In addition to supporting the service side of Parkway Social, I’ve also assisted with marketing and the creation of promotional materials. Since I’m drawn more to the creative side, I’ve worked closely with Chef Rome, Summer, Cree, and Maggie to design signage and flyers. This experience has challenged me to step outside of my personal design preferences and adapt my work to reflect someone else’s vision.
What does success look like for you now compared to before the program?
I don’t believe my definition of success has changed much since the beginning of this program, but my understanding of how to achieve it has. I still plan to pursue a career in design. However, I also recognize that I’m young, and many of life’s pressures haven’t fully set in yet.
What would you say to other young people in Chicago (ages 16–24) who are considering joining IYIP?
I would absolutely recommend joining, especially if you don’t have anything professionally lined up in the near future or haven’t had much work experience yet. Not only has the program kept me productive and taught me valuable skills, but it’s also been great for networking and building connections. Through conversations with coworkers and members, I’ve shared more about my educational background, made LinkedIn connections, and even learned about companies that originated here in Chicago. It’s opened more doors than I expected.
