Dae Black - IYIP Success Story
Program Details
What was your situation before joining IYIP? What challenges were you facing at the time?
My situation before joining IYIP was that I was looking for a job, but couldn't find one. I was at the start of my senior year, trying to figure out how I’d save up for college.
What made you decide to participate in the program?
I decided to participate in this program because it would help me figure things out throughout the year. In which it did.
What specific skills (professional or personal) did you gain through IYIP?
I learned how to cook, speak with customers, bond with coworkers, communicate effectively, and maintain business relationships.
Was there a particular moment, mentor, or experience in the program that really stood out to you?
Ms.Daylen is the one who really stood out to me. She not only helped me get a job but also made sure to check in on me throughout it. She didn’t judge how I felt and always gave good advice on how I could overcome obstacles during that time.
How did IYIP help you grow in confidence, responsibility, or leadership?
It helped me become a better leader. After joining IYIP, I was offered a spot on my school's Student Council. Then I was offered the role of Student Council President because of my confidence and responsibility! What led me to join the student council was being uplifted and encouraged by IYIP’s mentor, Ms.Daylen.
What kind of work experience did you gain, and how did it prepare you for future opportunities?
Through IYIP, I gained hands-on work experience in a real job environment. I learned the importance of managing my time, staying responsible, and working as a team. It prepared me for future opportunities by helping me understand professionalism and handling different situations at work.
How has participating in IYIP impacted your education, career goals, or current employment?
Participating in IYIP has helped me take my future more seriously. It has helped me stay focused on school and take my college applications more seriously. IYIP has also helped me gain experience that will benefit any future jobs and career paths.
How has success changed for you throughout programming?
Before the program, success for me was having a job, going to school, and making a decent amount of money. Now, success to me is so much more than that. Success means growing as a young woman, building skills that’ll help me in the future, being confident in myself and in my work, and taking on leadership roles where I know I can make a difference.
What would you say to other young people in Chicago (ages 16–24) who are considering joining IYIP?
Take the opportunity and join. IYIP is a great way to gain experience, build confidence, and community, and you’ll meet people who also align with your goals. It can also guide you, especially if you aren’t sure what you want for your future.
Is there anything else about your experience that you feel is important to share?
One last thing I want to share: IYIP won’t just help you find a job; they'll help you figure out yourself, too. They aren’t just people whose goal is to get you paid, but their goal is to make sure we have more successful young people. IYIP has given me support, confidence, and people who genuinely believe in me. That has truly made a big difference in how I see my future and myself.
