Alysha’s IYIP Success Story
Program Details
What was your situation before joining IYIP? What challenges were you facing at the time?
Before joining IYIP, I was unsure about my next steps and lacked confidence in my professional abilities. I was trying to balance whether I should go to school, my personal responsibilities, and my future career, including the one I have a trade in, but I didn’t have much experience with interviews. I also struggled with networking and understanding how to present myself in professional environments.
What made you decide to participate in the program?
I decided to participate in IYIP because I wanted an opportunity to gain hands-on experience and build skills that would help me long-term. I was looking for a program that would not only provide work experience but also mentorship and guidance. IYIP stood out because it focused on youth development and preparing young people for success beyond the program.
What specific skills (professional or personal) did you gain through IYIP?
Through IYIP, I gained professional skills such as communication, time management, teamwork, and workplace etiquette. I learned how to collaborate effectively with others, meet deadlines, and take initiative on projects. On a personal level, I developed stronger self-discipline, problem-solving skills, and the confidence to speak up and share my ideas.
Was there a particular moment, mentor, or experience in the program that really stood out to you?
One moment that stood out to me was receiving constructive feedback from my supervisor after completing a major task. Instead of feeling discouraged, I felt supported and motivated to improve. Having a mentor who took the time to guide me and explain how to grow professionally made a lasting impact on me. Daylen has been an awesome employment coach and has greatly supported me through this.
How did IYIP help you grow in confidence, responsibility, or leadership?
IYIP with Red Clay Dance Company, with the help of One On One, helped me grow in confidence by placing me in situations where I had to take responsibility and trust my abilities. Being given real tasks and expectations showed me that I was capable of handling more than I thought. Over time, I became more comfortable leading small projects, helping peers, and speaking confidently in group settings.
What kind of work experience did you gain, and how did it prepare you for future opportunities?
I gained hands-on work experience that taught me how professional environments operate. I learned how to communicate with supervisors, manage tasks independently, and contribute to a team. I earned various certifications along the way, which opened my eyes to the possibility of running my own business one day and using what I learned. This experience prepared me for future opportunities by providing practical examples to include in my resume and discuss in interviews.
How has participating in IYIP impacted your education, career goals, or current employment?
Participating in IYIP clarified my career goals and strengthened my commitment to my education. It helped me see the connection between what I learn in school and how those skills apply in the workplace. The experience also made me more motivated to pursue career opportunities that align with my interests and strengths.
What does success look like for you now compared to before the program?
Before the program, success felt distant and unclear. Now, success looks like continuous growth, setting clear goals, and taking intentional steps toward achieving them. It means being confident in my abilities, seeking opportunities to learn, and using my experiences to create a positive impact.
What would you say to other young people in Chicago (ages 16–24) who are considering joining IYIP?
I encourage them to take the opportunity seriously and give it their full effort. IYIP is more than just a job; it's a chance to build skills, gain mentors, and prepare for your future. Even if you feel unsure at first, the experience can open doors and help you grow in ways you may not expect.
Is there anything else about your experience that you feel is important to share?
One important thing to share is that growth does not always feel comfortable. There were moments when I felt challenged, but those were the moments that helped me grow the most. IYIP provided a safe and supportive environment to learn, make mistakes, and improve, which made all the difference in my development, and this will stick with me forever. Future opportunities will always be executed because I was given a chance.
