Program Details

Students in the Graduates Over Guns program recently participated in a powerful civic engagement experience designed to help them understand the importance of voting and participating in democracy. During this outing, students had the opportunity to register to vote and take part in early voting, turning what is often seen as a complex process into an empowering and educational moment.

Throughout the day, students learned about how elections work, why voting matters, and the role civic participation plays in shaping their communities. To make the experience even more interactive, the group participated in a mock election that allowed them to practice the voting process firsthand. This hands-on activity helped build confidence and ensured students understood what to expect when they enter the voting booth in the future.

One of the highlights of the experience was the opportunity for students to meet delegates from the Illinois election system. These conversations gave students a deeper understanding of how elections are organized and reinforced the importance of civic responsibility.

This experience was also a meaningful extension of the program’s Job Readiness component, which focuses on preparing students to become responsible, informed, and engaged members of their communities. Through this enrichment activity, students practiced important life and career skills such as critical thinking, decision-making, communication, and civic responsibility—skills that are essential not only in the workplace but also in active citizenship.

By the end of the day, students left feeling informed, empowered, and excited about the role they can play in their communities. Experiences like this are a core part of the Graduates Over Guns mission—equipping young people with the knowledge, confidence, and leadership skills they need to build a brighter future and make their voices heard.
