A Journey to the Restaurant Industry
Program Details
Xiaoling Li joined the Immigrant/Refugee Restaurant Job Training Program while working as a home care aide, dedicating her time to supporting others in their daily lives. While she found fulfillment in caregiving, Xiaoling was interested in exploring new opportunities in cooking. Through the training program, Xiaoling was introduced to the fundamentals of the food and restaurant industry. She gained hands-on experience in food preparation, kitchen operations, and customer service. At the same time, she developed a stronger understanding of restaurant operations. She has also successfully obtained the ServSafe® Manager certification through the program. Throughout her training, Xiaoling demonstrated persistence and a willingness to learn, and consistently collaborated with her peers. In addition to technical skills, the program provided her with mentorship and connections that supported her growth. With the knowledge, experience, and encouragement she gained, Xiaoling now collaborates with her husband and fellow participant, Guangshun Mei, in entrepreneurship. Together, they operate Chen’s House in Oak Lawn, where they serve a variety of Chinese dishes and sushi, bringing their shared vision to life.
