Program Details

Portia was recruited from the Auto Technology program at Lincoln Land Community College (LLCC) in Springfield. Gearing up to complete her training at LLCC, Portia explored employment opportunities within her field. With a job offer from S & K Buick, an apprenticeship was a natural fit. She would gain hands-on work experience (and a paycheck!) under the mentorship of a seasoned mechanic.

S & K Buick is excited to take part in the Apprenticeship Illinois Program and sees it as an opportunity to grow its workforce and reap the financial benefits of WIOA-funded On-the-Job Training (OJT) while getting Portia up to speed.

Portia has indicated her passion for auto mechanics and relishes the opportunity to bring a female perspective to the industry. She wants to make the auto repair process less intimidating for women who may feel out of their element when having their vehicle serviced. S & K sees the value in this as well and welcomes the diversity she brings to their staff.
