Hello! My name is Kaniya Houston, and Community Assistance Programs (CAPs) has been a valuable resource that contributed to many of the successes I enjoy today.

My journey with CAPs began during my undergraduate years. Through One Summer Chicago, I participated in Timeless Gifts, a youth development program that offered training in acting, singing, instrument playing, and overall professional development. At one point, participants were encouraged to apply to CAPs to continue with the program. After submitting my application, I was redirected a few days later to complete the process through One Summer Chicago. This experience took place during the summer while I was pursuing my undergraduate degree. After graduating from Hope College, I returned home to Chicago. I earned my certification as a Sobriety Coach and began my professional career as an Assistant Director at Sylvan Learning Center. Although my title was Assistant Director, I often operated in a director-level capacity while serving our community.

Soon after, I became determined to pursue a career with the Chicago Police Department. Confident that I would be offered the position, I submitted my two-week notice at Sylvan Learning Center. Unfortunately, things did not go as planned, and I was not selected for the role. During my period of unemployment, I launched my sober coaching business, Join Sobriety. While navigating uncertainty and exploring my next steps, I unexpectedly received a text message from CAPs about an informational session for 548 Foundation’s Clean Energy Program.

After spending five years at a predominantly white institution, attending that informational session felt like coming home. The atmosphere was welcoming, energetic, and authentic. It was chaotic in the best way, filled with laughter, snacks, meaningful connections, and valuable information. I applied to the program and was accepted!

My experience as a student with the 548 Foundation helped me grow professionally in ways I never imagined. I learned what it truly means to balance professionalism with authenticity. Through eleven weeks of dedication, learning, and hard work, I completed the program and was honored with the Innovative Student Award. Following graduation, I was offered the Outreach Coordinator position, which I proudly accepted. I have now been with 548 Foundation for over a year, and it has been a privilege to serve Chicago's communities while expanding our services to Aurora and Elgin.

While this is certainly a success story, my journey is far from over. The pen is still writing. A heartfelt thank you to Nadia ❤️ for believing in me and helping create opportunities that changed the trajectory of my life!
