Gloria Villanueva is building a strong foundation for a career in Early Childhood Education through her participation in the Early Childhood Education and Care (ECEC) Apprenticeship Program. Currently working at Educare West DuPage with children ages 3–5, Gloria has successfully transitioned from the pre-apprenticeship program to the apprenticeship pathway and is gaining valuable skills both in the classroom and on the job.
For Gloria, one of the most valuable lessons learned during the pre-apprenticeship program was the importance of time management. She discovered that maintaining a schedule, attending class consistently, and staying organized were key factors in her success. Keeping a journal and calendar to track assignments and important dates helped her stay on top of her coursework. She also made it a priority to engage with her professors by regularly asking questions and actively participating in class discussions.
"The most valuable lesson I learned was time management," Gloria shared. "It's important to have a schedule and be in class."
As she continues her apprenticeship, Gloria is eager to expand her knowledge and develop practical skills to strengthen her work with young children. She hopes to learn effective techniques for building positive relationships and become more hands-on in supporting the children in her classroom.
Looking ahead, Gloria's goal is to earn her certificate and become a lead teacher. She believes the apprenticeship program is helping her move closer to achieving that goal by connecting classroom learning with real-world experience.
"The readings in class help guide me in my work with the children in my classroom, and participating in the apprenticeship has boosted my confidence," she said.
When asked what advice she would give future pre-apprentices, Gloria emphasized the value of organization and self-management. Her words of wisdom for success are to "keep a journal to doodle, manage your assignments, and stay on top of your time."
Through dedication, organization, and a commitment to learning, Gloria is demonstrating how pre-apprenticeship programs can help students build confidence, develop professional skills, and prepare for rewarding careers in early childhood education.
