There's a saying people use when working in the arts. "You have to do free work before you get paid." This sentiment is accurate, but it's also a frustrating reality to live with. I've been doing free work on my own time for a few years now. It started in high school, when I began receiving opportunities to work on producing plays, musicals, and films outside of school. Most were considered apprenticeships or internships, and the knowledge I gained from these experiences cannot be overstated. However, pursuing my passion often kept me from contributing to my family the way I wanted. I attended the Chicago High School for the Arts from 9:00 AM to 5:00 PM and did classes and internships outside of school. Art also wasn't free to pursue, as expenses ranged from costumes to classes. I wanted to pay for my passion myself. However, I lacked the means to do so at the time.
My desire to work in production scared my parents a bit, since they knew it was hard to get reliable work in the industry. I can sincerely say that my participation in the Destiny Outreach program was a huge factor in proving to my parents that my dream was real. Through the program, I was partnered with Ashalon Productions, where I took on responsibilities that taught me more than ever before. On top of that, I was getting paid to do it. Destiny Outreach gives me, and my parents hope for, the future. I'll continue working for Ashalon after this cohort ends, and every day I work solidifies my dream even more. I can't thank Danita and the state enough for this opportunity.
