Career Compass: Where Summer Experience Becomes Future Opportunities
Program Details
Denise Brown, a student from Homewood-Flossmoor High School, made a lasting impression during her summer experience with the Career Compass Project at IMR Sports Performance Institute. From the beginning, Denise demonstrated a strong work ethic, dependability, and the ability to learn quickly and take on new responsibilities. Her leadership skills stood out, and she was selected to serve as a lead assistant for the afternoon and evening shifts, allowing her to take on additional responsibility and support other student workers.
Denise’s positive attitude, intelligence, and ability to work independently quickly earned the IMR Sports Performance Institute team's respect. Her performance throughout the summer went beyond what was expected of a student worker, and her supervisor recognized her potential to succeed beyond the Career Compass experience. Because of her outstanding performance, IMR Sports Performance Institute offered Denise the opportunity to remain employed as a part-time worker after the summer program ended.
Denise’s story is a wonderful example of how Career Compass can connect young people with meaningful work experiences while helping them develop the skills, confidence, and leadership abilities needed for future success. What began as a summer employment opportunity has become an ongoing job, demonstrating the lasting impact a positive work experience can have on a young person’s career journey.
