The Importance of Consistency as I Lead By Example
Program Details
I came to Homework Hangout Club seeking a job because I had overwhelming new responsibilities: a new house, a child, and life's pressures. My initial impression was how professional everyone was. This was an eye-opener; the dress and the overall support from staff were a personal plus. Homework Hangout fulfilled a need. This experience improved my mental state, as I was on the edge of giving up. The worksite environment was exactly what I needed. The orientation was relevant, as I could immediately see and reflect on what had happened and what brought me to this point in my life. The worksite was upbeat. I was able to organize things more clearly and feel more stable in my outside life. I reached a point where I was confident in pulling it all together.
My placement gave me a different perspective on supervising and being a supervisor. I worked with kids, and they kept me motivated. Even on bad days, I was impressed by how I could lead by example and be a positive role model for the kids. This placement as a youth worker was perfect. I had more than 6 years of experience coaching and working with middle school kids.
One takeaway for me was the level of professionalism I consistently observed in the staff. In my current position as a supervisor at Stars & Honey Food Manufacturer, I learned the importance of consistently presenting myself with accountability as I lead by example, expect and emphasize integrity and respect for all, and communicate effectively through complicated situations. As a supervisor, I lead by example and expect the same from those I supervise, because they can expect that from me. One remaining major point is to stay confident, keep your head up, and never give up. Just don’t stop working. Homework Hangout doesn’t change, as everything was authentic from day one.
