When I came to Homework Hangout Club, I was at an all-time low point. As a teenager growing up in Alabama, I was faced with the responsibility of rearing my younger brothers due to our mother’s untimely death.  Always putting others before me is how I lived for years and maybe still do to a degree even today. But I was determined to be there for my brothers, helping them to excel and become responsible adults. Once they reached adulthood and were in careers, I decided to seek out and learn about the family I knew existed but didn't know. This goal brought me to Decatur to meet and learn more about the family I never met.
Unfortunately, this connection did not develop as I hoped. I was torn and didn't know what to do. I had been here for more than a year and wasn't finding the support I felt I needed. So, I began researching on Google, and Homework Hangout Club popped up. I made an appointment and met with Dr. Dillon-Taylor [JTED Coordinator]. Meeting with her felt comfortable and comforting. I looked forward to this day, searching to better myself and find resources and a better direction.
After the interview, I felt a sense of balance and confirmation that I had made the right decision. I now had hope and more headspace. I wanted to better myself and find resources and guidance. I needed a job; I wanted to get my GED; I had a relative’s child and was now a foster mom; I needed child care; and I needed to become more stable. Once the orientation began, everything went so fast. I was ready and motivated. People I never met worked so hard to help me achieve my goals. In a short time, I obtained the resources I needed and was hired by the worksite where I was placed for training. I started working on my GED. I was in between living situations and was able to move to my own residence.
The worksite was a good fit for me as it served a good cause and was easy to support. It helped me help myself and others at the same time. This motivated me, and I was still able to help. This environment motivated me to do better and find more ways to help people. I started out stocking shelves, and now I attend Medical Assistant Training and GED classes online at the Garden State Science Technology Institute located in New Jersey. I work part-time at Olive Garden Restaurant, and I also have an appointment with an electrician apprenticeship opportunity. I will pursue this opportunity, and I believe there are no limits to educating yourself. I believe there is always room to better and improve yourself. Where there is a will, there is a way. Homework Hangout Club encouraged me, gave me hope, and provided support in many ways. I believe that if you love, respect, and have courage in yourself, you will succeed.
Thank you, Homework Hangout Club, for your compassion, direction, and support!
