Rachel entered the Community Service Officer apprenticeship program at the City of Carbondale Police Department with the support of Man-Tra-Con. As the first in her family to attend college, she was determined to become a police officer. As a nontraditional student, she needed training that would allow her to finish her education while supporting herself.

She spoke with others who were involved in unpaid apprenticeship programs but knew it was not an option as she had real-life bills living on her own. Upon learning about a paid apprenticeship, she knew it was the journey for her. Rachel wanted intensive, hands-on training to thrive as a police officer. From paperwork requirements to city layout, she craved in-depth education.

She was able to prove herself to a potential employer as she knew the importance and worry other students experience during their job search after college. “I wasn’t guaranteed a position, but I know with my department, they [saw] potential in me. I was able to show my work ethic and that I’m an honest and caring person and can bring a lot to the table,” Rachel added.

1. What experiences are you having now at your job or in classes that have made you successful?

With my new position at the Carbondale Police Department, I have gained experiences that will help me be successful. I am receiving onsite training, so when I graduate, I will already know what it takes to be an officer and know a lot of information, so my FTO training will go smoother.

2. What has your training program helped you achieve (either at school or work)?

My training program has helped me learn about the districts of Carbondale, many streets that I will need to remember, and the paperwork side of things.

3. What positive changes have resulted from your apprenticeship so far?

Positive changes that have helped me so far range from the pay, schooling being paid for, and the training that I’m receiving.

4. Provide details of your career or new job plans.

Once I graduate, I plan to attend the police academy in Belleville to be a sworn-in officer. Once I put at least 3 years into that, I would eventually like to move up to investigations.
