Program Details

Jamie Bunch worked part-time as a Customer Service Manager at Walmart while attending nursing training at Shawnee Community College (SCC) in Ullin. In May 2021, she obtained her Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN) license.

Jamie decided to further her training and applied for SCC’s RN program for the Fall 2021 semester. She was determined to complete the program and make life better for herself and her young son, who she was raising alone. Jamie separated from his father, and the two divorced in October 2021. At the time, she and her son were receiving SNAP; she knew they would need additional help in making her goal possible. She took the first step in achieving that goal in July of 2021 by coming to Shawnee Development Council to speak with a Career Planner about her future. After discussing available opportunities, she signed up for the WIOA program and never looked back.

While in training, Jamie’s grades reflected her perseverance and resilience in accomplishing her dream of working as a Registered Nurse (RN). Throughout the three semesters that she was enrolled, she received A’s and B’s, then received her Associate's Degree in Nursing (ADN) on July 29, 2022. After her divorce, Jamie took back her maiden name, Potter, to have a fresh start when she began her new life. Since then, she has been offered a job as an RN in the Pediatric Department of Memorial Hospital of Carbondale, with her first day on February 6, 2023.
