Ariel Prince's story is a remarkable journey of determination, skill-building, and professional growth, made possible through the support of JTED funding and the invaluable resources offered by YJC.

From Security Officer to Healthcare Professional

A young woman from Chicago, Ariel entered the medical field at 18 or 19. She has diverse experience working in specialty pharmacies, hospitals, and clinics. With a passion for healthcare, Ariel decided to enhance her credentials by obtaining certifications as a Patient Care Technician (PCT), EKG Technician, and Phlebotomy Technician from the Chicago Community Learning Center (CCLC) at Thorek Hospital.

Discovering YJC

Ariel was drawn to the Youth Job Center (YJC) after seeing its positive impact on others pursuing medical careers. Enrolling in YJC’s healthcare program, she was determined to advance her career and achieve her long-term goal of becoming a Physical Therapist or Veterinarian.

The Path to Employment

Through YJC's comprehensive professional development training, Ariel received assistance with resume writing and mock interviews, which were pivotal in her job search. Armed with her EKG Technician certification and the skills honed through YJC, Ariel was referred to UChicago Medicine. She successfully interviewed and secured a position as a Cardiac Telemetry Technician, a role she is passionate about and excels in.

Continuous Learning and Giving Back

Ariel thrives in her role at UChicago Medicine and is pursuing further education to expand her career options. Balancing her job and studies, she has taken on paid work experience as a healthcare tutor, helping other JTED students prepare for their AMCA board exams to become EKG Technicians, PCTs, and Phlebotomy Technicians. Her dedication has enabled over five students to pass their exams and understand complex course materials.

Financial Literacy and Career Coaching

YJC’s Financial Opportunity Center connected Ariel with Trevor, who provided valuable insights into credit building, saving, and financial literacy. Additionally, Ariel's relationship with her career coach, Sara Algawerash, has been instrumental in her success. They worked closely through various communication channels, ensuring Ariel received the best support and benefits YJC offers.

Reflection and Advice

Reflecting on her journey, Ariel realizes she is much more intelligent and capable than initially believed. Her advice to other YJC clients is to utilize the resources available through the program entirely. If she could return, she would have signed up for the program sooner. She encourages her friends and anyone interested in advancing their careers to join YJC, as it offers extensive support and opportunities.

A Bright Future Ahead

Ariel’s favorite part of YJC has been the Workforce Readiness Training and the relationship with her career coach. The program has significantly impacted her career trajectory, providing her with the tools and confidence needed to excel in healthcare. Ariel is now working towards furthering her education, with aspirations of becoming a Physical Therapist, Veterinarian, or Cardiologist.
