Certification is not required for diesel mechanics. However, voluntary certification is available. It is a sign that mechanics have achieved a certain level of skill and knowledge. Bus and truck mechanics may choose to become certified in one or more areas of heavy truck repair. These areas include: brakes, gasoline engines, diesel engines, drive trains, electrical systems and suspension, and steering. For certification in each area, mechanics must pass a written exam and have two years of hands-on work in that area.

Two years of formal training from high school, trade school, or community college may take the place of up to one year of work experience. To keep the certification, bus and truck mechanics must retake the tests every five years. Certification helps mechanics keep up-to-date on the changes in technology.
