In Illinois, dental hygienists must be licensed by the Illinois Department of Financial and Professional Regulation. Licensing requirements include:

  • completion of high school or its equivalent;
  • completion of an accredited two-year dental hygiene program;
  • passage of both written and clinical exams;
  • current cardiopulmonary resuscitation certification (CPR); and,
  • payment of a fee.

Licensing must be renewed every three years and requires 36 hours of continuing professional education.
