Clinical Dietitians - Working Conditions

In a typical work setting, dietitians:

Interpersonal Relationships

  • Have a high level of social contact with patients, clients, doctors, nurses, and other health care workers.
  • Work as part of a health care team and coordinate with others.
  • Communicate with others in person, over the telephone, and by e-mail daily. Occasionally write letters and memos.
  • Are somewhat responsible for the health and safety of others.

  • Occasionally deal with conflict situations where people are rude or angry.
  • Are somewhat responsible for the work done by others.

Physical Work Conditions

  • Always work indoors.
  • Are often exposed to diseases and infections while working with clients.
  • Work somewhat close to other people, such as when sharing office space.

Work Performance

  • Must be complete and exact in their work to protect the health of their patients.
  • Work in a moderately competitive environment and meet weekly deadlines.
  • Rarely consult a supervisor before making a decision or setting daily tasks and goals.
  • Often make decisions that strongly impact their patients.

Hours/Travel

  • May work full time or part time. Usually work 40 hours a week.
  • Work a regular, set schedule each week.
