Certification is optional for executive secretaries. However, certification demonstrates a level of skill and experience. The International Association of Administrative Professionals awards the Certified Professional Secretary (CPS) credential. To become certified, applicants must:
- work as an administrative professional;
- have two years of work experience or less, depending on the level of college education; and
- pass an exam.
Certification must be renewed every five years.
