In Illinois, home health aides who work in Medicare-certified agencies such as nursing homes must first be certified nursing assistants. In order to qualify as a certified nursing assistant, an applicant must:

  • be at least 16 years of age;
  • pass an Illinois State Police background check;
  • have completed 8 years of grade school or provide proof of equivalent knowledge;
  • complete an approved Nursing Assistant Training Program or equivalent training;
  • pass an examination; and,
  • pay an examination fee.
