In Illinois, home health aides who work in Medicare-certified agencies such as nursing homes must first be certified nursing assistants. In order to qualify as a certified nursing assistant, an applicant must:
- be at least 16 years of age;
- pass an Illinois State Police background check;
- have completed 8 years of grade school or provide proof of equivalent knowledge;
- complete an approved Nursing Assistant Training Program or equivalent training;
- pass an examination; and,
- pay an examination fee.
