In Illinois, geologists do not need to be licensed. However, persons practicing as licensed professional geologists must be licensed by the Illinois Department of Financial and Professional Regulation.
Applicants for licensure must:
- complete a degree in geology from an accredited college or university;
- have at least four years of professional experience, including two years of experience under the supervision of a licensed professional geologist; and
- pass an examination.
