In Illinois, insurance agents or producers must be licensed. They are licensed by the Illinois Department of Insurance. To be licensed a person must:

  • be at least 18 years of age;
  • complete a pre-licensing course of 15 hours of study for each class of insurance (life,accident & health, property, casualty) for which an insurance producer license is requested;
  • pass a written exam unless exempt; and,
  • pay exam and licensing fees.

All licenses must be renewed after two years. Before each license renewal, an insurance producer shall satisfactorily complete at least 30 hours of course study.
