Management consultants do not have to be certified to practice. However, certification represents a standard of excellence. The Institute of Management Consultants offers certification to management analysts. Certified management consultants (CMCs) are required to apply for recertification every three years. Applicants for CMC designation must:

• have had at least three years of experience as a full time management consultant;
• provide multiple references;
• provide written summaries of five client assignments;
• pass an interview by senior CMCs;
• pass an ethics exam.
