Training for nursing assistants in an approved certification program is required for employment in medicare-certified agencies such as nursing homes. Several community colleges, area vocational centers, and high schools in Illinois offer certification programs.
In order to qualify as a certified nursing assistant, an applicant must:
- be at least 16 years of age;
- pass an Illinois State Police background check;
- have completed 8 years of grade school or provide proof of equivalent knowledge;
- complete an approved Nursing Assistant Training Program or equivalent training;
- pass an exam; and,
- pay an exam fee.
