Pharmacists - Working Conditions

In a typical work setting, pharmacists:

Interpersonal Relationships

  • Have a high level of social contact with others daily by phone, e-mail, and in person.
  • Are greatly responsible for the work done by other employees and interns.
  • Often deal with conflict situations and people who may be unpleasant, angry, or discourteous.
  • Are very responsible for the health and safety of others.

Physical Work Conditions

  • Always work indoors.
  • Are often exposed to diseases and infections.
  • Work very near patients and customers, often within arm's reach.
  • Sometimes work in a noisy or distracting environment.

Work Performance

  • Must be sure that their work is exact and accurate.
  • Repeat the same tasks over and over, such as dispensing drugs.
  • Often make decisions on that strongly impact patients without consulting a supervisor first.
  • Usually set their own tasks and goals for the day.

Hours/Travel

  • Have a set schedule each week.
  • May work more or less than 40 hours a week.
  • May work evenings, nights, weekends, and holidays depending on where they work.
