In Illinois, licensure through the Illinois Department of Financial and Professional Regulation is required to work as a physician's assistant. Licensing requirements include:
- be a graduate of an approved physician assistant program;
- hold a certificate issued by the National Commission on Certification of Physician Assistants;
- pass the National Commission on Certification of Physician Assistants exam; and,
- pay an application fee.
Licensure must be renewed every two years.

To become certified by the National Commission on Certification of Physician Assistants applicants must:
- complete their training from an approved program;
- pass an exam that assesses basic medical and surgical knowledge; and,
- pay fees.
Certification is required for licensure. PAs are required to complete 100 hours of continuing medical education every two years and take a re-certification exam every six years.
