In Illinois, a person must be licensed by the Illinois Department of Financial and Professional Regulation to practice as a podiatrist. Licensing requirements include:
- being 21 years of age;
- graduation from an approved college of podiatric medicine with a doctor of podiatric medicine degree;
- minimum of one year of postgraduate training approved by the Council on Podiatric Medical Education of the American Podiatric Medical Association (APMA) which includes residency and preceptorship programs;
- passage of an exam; and,
- payment of a licensing fee.
Licensure must be renewed every two years upon completion of 100 hours of continuing education relevant to podiatric medicine and payment of a renewal fee.
