In a typical work setting, receptionists:

Interpersonal Relationships

  • Have a high level of social interaction with others by phone, e-mail, memos, and in person.
  • Are somewhat responsible for the work done by others.
  • Sometimes face conflict situations.
  • Often deal with people who are rude, angry, or upset.

Physical Work Conditions

  • Almost always work indoors. May work outdoors if working at a park.
  • Work somewhat close to other people, such as when sharing office space.
  • Are sometimes exposed to sound and noise levels that are distracting.

Work Performance

  • Must be exact and accurate in their work.
  • Repeat the same mental and physical tasks, such as answering phones.
  • Regularly make decisions that affect others, sometimes without consulting a supervisor.

Hours/Travel

  • Generally have a set schedule each week.
