Recreational Therapists - Working Conditions

In a typical work setting, recreational therapists:

Interpersonal Relationships

  • Communicate with others by phone, e-mail, and in person every day.
  • Work as part of a team.
  • Are responsible for the health, safety, and work done by others.
  • Occasionally deal with conflict situations and people who may be rude or angry.

Physical Work Conditions

  • Work indoors most of the time.
  • Are often exposed to diseases or infections from patients.
  • Work within a few feet of others.

Work Performance

  • Must be very accurate and avoid errors.
  • Make decisions that impact others often, sometimes without consulting a supervisor.
  • Set some of their own tasks and goals each day.
  • Work in a moderately competitive environment and meet daily and weekly deadlines.

Hours/Travel

  • Have a set schedule each week.
  • Work 40 hours a week.
