Certification is available for service station attendants through the National Institute for Automotive Service Excellence (ASE). ASE offers a widely recognized standard of achievement for automobile service workers. Certification can help attendants advance to the position of technician. Certification is available for automobile technicians, medium/ heavy truck technicians, body/paint technicians, parts specialists, or engine machinists. The more certifications a person has, the higher he or she can advance. To maintain certification, technicians must retake specialty examinations every five years.
