In a typical work setting, tax preparers:
Interpersonal Relationships
- Communicate with others by telephone, e-mail, and in person on a daily basis. They also write letters and memos, but less often.
- Have a medium level of social contact. They meet with clients, but spend much of their time working alone on forms.
Physical Work Conditions
- Often work indoors.
- Usually share office space with other workers.
Work Performance
- Must be very exact in their work and be sure all details are done. Errors could cost clients money or cause legal problems.
- Make decisions on a weekly basis that strongly impact clients.
- They make some decisions without consulting a supervisor, but sometimes get advice before acting.
- Repeat the same work activities.

- Work in a competitive atmosphere where weekly deadlines must be met.
Hours/Travel
- May work only during tax season, which is January through April.
- May work 40 hours a week or more, including evenings and weekends during tax season.
