Those trainers working with marine animals are often required to be Self-Contained Underwater Breathing Apparatus (SCUBA) certified. SCUBA training and certification is available through dive shops and private instruction.

Permits are required to import or export wild and domestic animals. Check with the regional office of the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service for permit information. Also, many state and local governments require a permit or license to keep certain animals. Check with your state department of agriculture, department of fish and game, and county or city government for specific information.

Racehorse trainers are licensed by many states, including Illinois. Applicants for a license in Illinois must:

  • be at least 18;
  • have at least two years of experience in a licensed racing occupation;
  • submit three letters of recommendation;
  • demonstrate, by actual performance, their knowledge of horsemanship; and
  • pass a written examination.
