Certification is optional for bakers. It is rarely required for employment or advancement. Certification is a way for bakers to achieve recognition for their skills. To become a Certified Journey Baker (CJB) applicants must:

• have four years of experience, and
• pass a written exam.

To become a Certified Master Baker (CMB), applicants must:

• have eight years of experience,
• pass a written exam, and
• pass a practical baking test.
