Coffee Shop Attendant - Overview

Counter workers work at counters in coffee shops, small restaurants, and cafeterias.

Counter workers greet customers and take food and beverage orders. If coffee or other beverages are ordered, counter workers pour and serve them. They take or call food orders to the kitchen. They may prepare sandwiches, salads, and other items from the menu.

Workers calculate bills and give them to customers. They may operate cash registers, receive payment, and make change. They balance the cash register at the end of the day and keep records of the day's receipts.

Counter workers serve food to customers once it is ready. They may wrap food so customers can take it with them.

Counter workers clean counter tops and food-serving areas. They collect dirty dishes and return them to the kitchen to be cleaned. They also sweep floors and clean equipment. Counter workers make sure that sanitation standards are met.
