Fire Fighters - Overview

Firefighters put out fires and rescue people who are in danger.

Firefighters respond to emergencies. When responding to a fire, firefighters connect hoses to hydrants and operate pumps. They enter burning buildings to extinguish fires and rescue anyone inside. Wildland firefighters respond to forest fires by creating fire lines and using prescribed burns to prevent unctrolled fire spread.

Firefighters also repond to emergency calls such as traffic accidents, search-and-rescue calls, and natural disaster aid. They may provide medical care.

When they're not responding to an emergency, firefighters maintain their knowledge by participating in fire drills and demonstrations. They may attend seminars on fire fighting techniques. Firefighters also inspect their equipment and keep it in good working condition. They also must maintain a high level of physical fitness.

Some firefighters make presentations about fire safety and prevention to educate the public. They may speak at schools.
