In a typical work setting, firefighters:

Interpersonal Relationships

• Communicate with others by phone, e-mail, and in person every day. Occasionally write letters and memos.
• Occasionally speak in front of large groups.
• Usually work as part of a team and are responsible for the work done by others.
• Are very responsible for the health and safety of others.

Physical Work Conditions

• Work both outdoors and indoors.
• Work in an enclosed vehicle, such as a fire truck, on a daily basis.
• Are often exposed to contaminants.

• Are regularly exposed to diseases, hazardous equipment, and dangerous conditions that may result in minor injuries.
• Often work in cramped spaces that require getting into awkward positions.
• Are exposed to sounds and noise levels that are distracting and uncomfortable on a weekly basis.

• Wear protective gear, including specialized safety equipment, most days.

Work Performance

• Must be very exact in their work. Errors could result in serious or fatal injuries.

Hours/Travel

• Generally work a set schedule each week.
• Forest firefighters may work days, nights, weekends, and holidays and have an irregular schedule.
