Firefighters - Licensing / Certification

Many firefighters are certified as emergency medical technicians. See the emergency medical technicians career for more information about certification requirements.

Some fire departments also require firefighters to be certified as paramedics.

In Illinois, fire fighters are certified by the Office of the Illinois State Fire Marshall. Certification requirements include:

completion of one year of fire officer training;
successful completion of written and practical examinations; and
experience requirements.
