In Illinois, lawyers must be licensed by the Illinois Supreme Court to practice law. To gain licensure, applicants must:

  • be at least 21 years old;
  • graduate from an approved law school; and
  • pass the Illinois State Bar exam.

The bar exam consists of two parts. The first part, the academic qualification examination, covers various legal subjects. The second part, the professional responsibility examination, covers the Illinois Rules of Professional Conduct.
