In a typical work setting, locomotive engineers:

Interpersonal Relationships

  • Have a high level of social contact. They talk to others by telephone and in person every day.
  • Have a substantial amount of responsibility for the health and safety of others.
  • Are greatly responsible for the work done by others.
  • Often deal with conflict situations in which others may be unpleasant or angry.

Physical Work Conditions

  • Work both indoors and outdoors.
  • Are exposed to sounds and noise levels that are distracting and uncomfortable every day.
  • Almost always wear protective gear such as work boots or ear plugs.
  • Are often exposed to contaminants, and hazardous equipment and conditions.

  • May work in a shared or private work space.
  • Are often exposed to whole body vibration.

Work Performance

  • Must be very exact in their work. Errors could result in serious accidents.
  • Repeat the same physical and mental activities.
  • Work in a somewhat competitive environment and meet daily deadlines.
  • Make decisions that affect others daily. They often act independently but may seek input from others before making large decisions.

Hours/Travel
