In Illinois, physical therapist assistants must be licensed by the Illinois Department of Financial and Professional Regulation. Licensing requirements include:

• being at least 18 years old;
• completion of an approved, accredited two-year program in physical therapy assistance;
• passing a written exam authorized by the Illinois Department of Financial and Professional Regulation; and,
• payment of a license fee.

The license must be renewed every two years.
