Police officers and sheriffs protect people and property and make sure that people follow laws.

Police officers and sheriffs have general law enforcement duties. They have regular patrols and respond to emergency and nonemergency calls. When they patrol, officers and sheriffs observe people, traffic, and activities to make sure laws are followed.

When they get a call, police officers and sheriffs determine if everyone is safe. They may provide medical care and interview any witnesses. They evaluate the information they receive and determine the best way to respond.

Some police officers work in special units such as:

• Motorcycle
• Horseback
• Canine unit
• SWAT teams

Officers in large police departments are usually assigned to a specific duty. Some respond to traffic accidents, while others handle robberies.
