In Illinois, an Early Childhood certificate is required for those teaching children age 0 to grade 3 in programs receiving state grants. This certificate is valid only in facilities approved by the Illinois State Board of Education. Certification requirements include:

• completion of an Illinois State Board of Education approved program;
• a bachelor’s degree from a recognized college;
• successful completion of the certification exams; and
• payment of the required fees.

Initial certification is valid for four years.
